Internet Slowdown Day Why Your Favorite Sites Have the Spinning Wheel of Death

09/10/2014

Internet Slowdown Day is here. While the Internet itself won't be slowing down, expect to see the dreaded "spinning wheel of death" loading symbol featured prominently on some of your favorite websites, including Netflix, Foursquare, Etsy and more. The group of websites have banded together into "Team Internet" to protest proposed changes to net neutrality rules, which would allow Internet service providers to charge high traffic websites more or essentially force them to create a "slow lane" for customers. The loading icons lead users to the "Battle for the Net" website where they can sign a letter to Congress, the Federal Communications Commission and the White House. The hope is that the campaign will inspire millions of people to submit comments to the FCC on net neutrality before the public comment period ends on Sept. 15.
